About us
A newsroom that belongs to Chesterfield and Derbyshire
We started Chesterfield Times because local reporting here had thinned out while the noise around it grew louder. Our answer is fewer, better stories in a calm reading environment.
Our purpose is simple: tell people who live in Derbyshire what is actually happening, in language that respects them.
That means sitting through council meetings that finish after ten, reading the full budget papers rather than the press release, and following up on the charity appeal three months after the launch photo. It also means covering the parts of life that hold a county together — the market stalls, the brass bands, the walking groups, the family-run kitchens.
We are independent. No political party, developer or council funds us. Our income comes from readers and from clearly labelled directory listings taken by local businesses, and neither buys influence over a single line of reporting.
We publish deliberately. If a story is not ready, it waits. If we get something wrong, we correct it where you can see it. And we will never trade your attention for an advertising impression by throwing a pop-up across a paragraph.
Our standards
- Headlines describe what the story contains — nothing is written to bait a click.
- No pop-ups, interstitials or newsletter walls interrupt an article.
- Commercial directory listings are clearly labelled and handled outside the newsroom.
- Corrections are published openly, dated, and never quietly edited away.
- We name our sources wherever it is safe and fair to do so.
- Every venue, walk and stay in our guides has been visited and paid for by us.
