Privacy Policy
We collect as little as possible, explain all of it, and never trade your data. This is the whole picture in plain language.
2. What we collect
If you subscribe to the newsletter we hold your email address and the date you subscribed. If you contact the newsroom we hold your message and any details you include. We do not ask for your name, address or date of birth to read the site.
3. Why we collect it
Your email address is used only to send the newsletter you asked for. Correspondence is used to answer you, verify facts and, where relevant, keep a record of a correction request. We do not sell or rent personal data, ever.
4. Analytics and cookies
We use privacy-respecting, aggregate analytics to understand which articles are read. It does not build a profile of you, follow you between sites or feed an advertising network. We set no advertising or tracking cookies, and we serve no pop-ups or consent-harvesting overlays.
5. Embedded content
Some pages embed a map from OpenStreetMap so you can find a listed business. When an embed loads, that provider may see your IP address under its own privacy policy. Nothing else is shared with them.
6. How long we keep it
Newsletter data is kept while you remain subscribed and deleted within thirty days of unsubscribing. Newsroom correspondence is kept for up to two years, or longer where journalistic or legal record-keeping requires it.
7. Your rights
Under UK GDPR you may ask for a copy of the data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, object to processing, or withdraw consent to the newsletter at any time. Every edition carries a one-click unsubscribe link. We respond within one month.
8. Journalistic exemption
Some data protection rights are limited where personal data is processed for journalism in the public interest. We rely on that exemption only where necessary to protect sources or the integrity of a story before publication.
9. Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, tell us first and we will try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
