David Lilley: Local Roots, Global Perspective

From the coalface to international business, a life anchored in Derbyshire, family and community.

Chesterfield Times 5 October 2026

Renishaw and Clowne have shaped the map of David Lilley’s life, serving as the constant anchor for a journey that has otherwise stretched far beyond the borders of North East Derbyshire. Born and raised in the area, Lilley carries a deep-rooted pride in his origins. Family is central to his world; he is a devoted father to four children - a son and three daughters-and shares his life and professional endeavours with his wife, Sarah. Yet, despite his lifelong connection to his home turf, his professional footprint tells a story of international scale, corporate leadership, and a relentless curiosity for how business and communities work.

From the Coalface to the Corporate Ladder

Long before boardrooms and international travel defined his schedule, Lilley’s early working life was grounded in the grit of Britain's industrial heritage. As a youngster, he took on a variety of roles, including working at a motorway service area and serving as a fitter operator on the coal preparation plants in Kiveton and Maltby. Having witnessed the final chapter of the mining era firsthand, he remains immensely proud of those roots and counts himself fortunate to have lived through that pivotal moment in working-class history.

Alongside industry, another early passion called to him: football. A dedicated sports fanatic, Lilley spent time working as a professional sports reporter and commentator. He delivered broadcasts for several radio stations, earning particular acclaim for his work with Hallam FM in Sheffield.

When the mining era closed, a new chapter opened in sales. Joining CPM International - a company still operating today - Lilley managed a contract with BT across South Yorkshire. His figures quickly soared to the top of the region, prompting his transition to a major contract with American Express. Ascending rapidly, he became a regional manager overseeing a quarter of the country and leading a team of up to 25 people. Under his guidance, his team consistently ranked among the top-performing units across European counterparts.

When Amex head office in London encouraged him to apply for a senior sales manager position, Lilley initially hesitated, feeling he lacked the formal university credentials. The company persisted, however, and he secured the role of national manager for new business partnerships - ultimately winning the prestigious SE excellence Award as the top salesperson in Europe.

“My time working in professional and community radio shaped my abilities as a regular public speaker”

That high-performance track record caught the attention of industry peers, leading to a headhunted move to RCI Europe as Strategic Alliance Director. In 2008, he stepped into the role of Managing Director for a private travel members club before pivoting in 2010 to independent, self-employed consultancy. Over the subsequent years, his strategic acumen and agile mind have shaped high-level contracts with household names including Hiscox Insurance, British Gas, Barclays, MasterCard, and Forever Living Products.

Across finance and hospitality, his career has taken him deep into the commercial landscapes of Germany, Cyprus, Sweden, France, and the United States.

Community First

Despite managing multi-million-pound portfolios and international travel, Lilley’s feet have never left the ground. Sixteen years ago, in 2010, he co-founded Elastic FM, a community radio and media initiative designed to drive positive social impact across the region.

Over the years, Lilley and the Elastic FM team have spearheaded initiatives supporting local schools, connecting businesses, and tackling vital public health challenges. Their work has extended into addiction recovery projects and dedicated outreach for elderly residents. Reflecting on his journey, Lilley notes:

“I believe that we should all take a pride in the area in which we live. If we say we care about the community, we should consider our contribution to it”

"Whilst I'm in my late 50s mentally, I feel like I still feel like a young man. I've always been passionate about my local community. I believe that we should all take a pride in the area in which we live, and that has been the case with me. The community projects I've been involved in tangibly demonstrate that I am passionate about the area that we live in, passionate about the United Kingdom, and from a mind where I believe that we could all see much more kindness in the world."

Navigating the Digital Horizon

Lilley’s career has continually been defined by an ability to look around corners. When social media first emerged in 2007 with the growth of Facebook and Twitter, he was among the first in his sphere to design and deliver courses demonstrating their commercial value.

Today, however, he views the digital landscape with a mixture of pragmatic concern. He observes that society has reached a point of platform saturation, where giants like X, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, and YouTube dominate human attention, pulling younger generations into smartphone dependency. Furthermore, he acknowledges the profound disruptions promised by artificial intelligence:

"We are seeing companies who were once not able to write well or design well developing those skills through AI, so there is an inevitable knock-on effect on future jobs."

Personal Passions and the Road Ahead

“We are seeing companies who were once not able to write well or design well developing those skills through AI, so there is an inevitable knock-on effect on future jobs.”

Away from strategy documents and boardroom tables, Lilley is a lifelong student of mental health and well-being. He is currently putting the finishing touches on his upcoming book, Your Splendid Life, which he anticipates will be published in 2027.

His sporting allegiances remain as fervent as ever. He is a passionate supporter of his local club, Chesterfield FC, alongside following Liverpool in the Premier League. Over the last two decades, he has also developed a deep love for basketball, where he can regularly be found courtside cheering on the Sheffield Sharks.

From the coal plants of South Yorkshire to the boardrooms of Europe and the airwaves of Derbyshire, David Lilley’s story is one of continuous reinvention anchored by an unwavering commitment to community, family, and human connection.
